Smoke - Short Film - Version: Runrig (Solus na madainn) by Jemma
** see notes below. For our Contemporary Technology Studies (BA Fine Art - Year 1) we each had to shoot a 2 minute (approx.) film (In-camera editing i.e. no software) that was in response to / inspired by a series of films/film makers we had been shown (films made by other Fine Art Filmmakers). I chose Spill (1999 and 2006) by Graham Gussin. I used incense and tobacco smoke for my filmshoots and used a series of LED lighting to show depth and bring different levels of the smoke into focus - as it swirled and danced across the scene. Smoke highlights the ever present invisible air currents and capturing it on film brings out its hypnotic, almost "fluid" patterns as it moves and changes constantly. |

Each moment of this film varies and is unique. There is a painterly quality to the swirling smoke that is expressed by one of its most basic forms - the natural rhythm and flow of the union of 3 elements (Fire, Earth and Air).
The simplistic beauty of the elements is something that that in this century, most overlook and fail to appreciate - their overly busy lives overstimulated with tv series, 3d movies, mobile phone apps, social networking and living that rat race that has become our lives. ...more info is on the link (background to the use of smoke within various traditions.
